비단(非但), 삶: 생을 수놓다

비단은 단순한 직물이 아니다. 누에고치에서 길어 올린 명주실은 몸을 덮는 물성을 넘어, 인간의 삶을 관통하는 상징적 장치로 작동해 왔다. 붉은빛은 권위와 길상을 드러내고, 직조의 결은 수양과 품격의 은유로 확장되었다. 비단은 물질을 넘어 정신을 입히는 문화적 언어였다.

이번 전시는 탄생에서 이별까지 이어지는 삶의 주요 국면을 실크와 함께 풀어낸다. 갓난아이를 감싸는 첫 천, 첫돌의 돌 상, 명절의 차례상과 한복, 혼례의 폐백과 예복, 마지막 이별을 기리는 제사상까지. 생애주기를 따라 반복되는 의례 속에서 비단은 인간의 삶을 지탱하는 매개체로 자리한다. 비단과 생애주기가 맞닿는 이유는 분명하다. 인간의 삶은 끊임없이 의례로 구조화되며, 그 의례는 언제나 직물 위에서 구현되어 왔다. 태어남을 감싸는 천, 성장의 순간을 기록하는 옷, 공동체의 유대를 드러내는 복식, 사랑과 결속을 상징하는 혼례복, 죽음을 감싸는 수의까지. 실크는 삶의 경계를 드러내고, 인간 존재의 전환점을 증언한다.

《비단(非但), 삶 : 생을 수놓다》는 개관전으로서 실크박물관이 지향하는 방향을 제시한다. 실크를 단순히 전통의 산물이나 장인의 기술로만 바라보는 것이 아니라, 인간의 삶을 직조하는 문화적 매개체로 재해석한다. 진주에서 이어져 온 실크의 역사를 삶의 시간과 결합시키며, 직물과 정신이 중첩되는 지점을 탐구한다. 비단은 결국 생애와 닮아 있다. 치밀한 직조 속에 쌓인 실은 시간의 켜와 같고, 한 올 한 올 이어지는 결은 인간 존재의 흔적과 같다. 이 전시는 그 실을 따라가며, 비단이 곧 우리의 삶을 수놓아온 문화적 기억이었음을 드러낸다.

Life Woven in Silk: From Birth to Departure

Silk is not merely a textile. Drawn from the cocoon of the silkworm, silk thread has long functioned as a symbolic apparatus that reaches beyond the material act of covering the body, penetrating the course of human life itself. Its crimson hues signified authority and auspiciousness, while the grain of its weave expanded into a metaphor for discipline, cultivation, and dignity. Silk was a cultural language that clothed the spirit as much as the body.

This exhibition unfolds the major phases of human life, from birth to farewell, through silk. The first cloth that wraps a newborn, the table prepared for the first birthday, ancestral rites and hanbok worn on holidays, ceremonial garments and gifts exchanged in marriage, and the ritual table honoring the final departure. Within these recurring rites that trace the life cycle, silk emerges as a vital medium that sustains human existence. The affinity between silk and the life cycle is clear. Human life is continuously structured through rituals, and those rituals have always been realized upon textiles. Cloth that embraces birth, garments that record moments of growth, dress that reveals communal bonds, wedding attire symbolizing love and union, and burial shrouds that envelop death. Silk marks the thresholds of life and bears witness to the transitions of human existence.

Silk: Life, Embroidering Existence positions itself as an inaugural exhibition that articulates the vision of the Silk Museum. Rather than viewing silk solely as a product of tradition or craftsmanship, it reinterprets it as a cultural medium that weaves human life itself. By intertwining the history of silk rooted in Jinju with the temporality of lived experience, the exhibition explores the point where textile and spirit overlap. Silk ultimately resembles life. The densely woven threads resemble accumulated layers of time, and each strand, connected one by one, mirrors the traces of human existence. Following these threads, the exhibition reveals that silk has always been a cultural memory through which our lives have been embroidered.
